Tourism Research Australia has released the Bed and Breakfast Industry Snapshot 2008 - a report on visitor numbers and activity throughout 2007.
The Snapshot presents an overview of research data taken from national and international visitor surveys. The research is based on bed and breakfast and guest house stays which may also include farm stays, but these are not identified as such.
Research shows that there has been strong growth from international markets. In contrast, there has been a steady decline in domestic visitors staying in bed and breakfasts and guest houses since 2002, however, this trend was slightly reversed in 2007 with the research showing a small increase in domestic visitors over 2006.
European visitors were more likely to use bed and breakfast accommodation than other visitors accounting for nearly half of all international bed and breakfast visitors. Visitors from the UK (22%), New Zealand (13%) and the USA (12%) were the most likely to stay in this form of accommodation.
1.2 million domestic and 140,000 international bed and breakfast visitors spent totals of nearly $980,000,000 and $560,000,000 respectively during their stays.
This and other Snapshot reports that may be of interest to operators for Cultural & Heritage, Food & Wine and Mature Age are available from the Tourism Research Australia website.
