Experience living history with gold rush period costumed re-enactments at Sovereign Hill - Australian Gold Rush Town at Ballarat in Victoria Australia.
Sovereign Hill recreates the decade of the 1850s when gold was discovered and mined in Ballarat and built on 25 hectares (60 acres) of the site linked with the richest alluvial gold rush in the world. The village comprises over 60 buildings, is full of working shops, more than 40 working horses, period costumed staff and an interpretive centre.
Nearby is the Eureka Centre which vividly displays and tells the Eureka story of 1854 - Australia's only rebellion, when government troops attacked entrenched aggrieved miners who assembled under the famed Southern Cross flag.
