The Spring Racing Carnival in Melbourne over a 5 week period is the highlight of the turf racing season in Australia and culminates with the running of "the race that stops a nation" the Melbourne Cup at Flemington Racecourse on the first Tuesday in November.
A handicap race over 3200 metres and first run in 1861, the Melbourne Cup is regarded as one of the world's premier races. Other famed race meetings during The Spring Carnival are the Caufield Cup at Caufield - a handicap race over 2400 meteres dating back to 1879, and the Cox Plate at Moonee Valley - Australia's most prestigious weight for age race over 2040 metres.
